It takes a special person to open their hearts to one of our dogs, to love and nurture them for a period of time, and then give them up when their new permanent homes are found.
Some things you might like to know about fostering a dog....
- NED dogs are up to date on shots, and health checked. All NED dogs will be spayed or neutered before they are adopted out.
- Average foster home stay has been one to two weeks. Most likely, not more than a week as many dogs have approved adopters ready and waiting before they get here. Sometimes it is only a couple nights. NED dogs usually arrive on weekends.
- Foster homes will be asked to provide dog food; NED pays all veterinary expenses. NED can also provide a crate.
- If, for any reason, you can no longer keep a dog that you are fostering, NED will move the dog to another foster home. No problem.
- You may choose to foster only puppies (one or more!!), or only females, or only adult dogs. Or only dogs that are good with cats. Or only small white dogs. That's cool. You may also choose the exciting opportunity to foster a mom and her very young pups. Very often dogs show up in shelters pregnant or having just given birth. Their future is very bleak; most shelters cannot afford the space, time, or money to care for them. When you take in a whole family, NED will be happy to provide supplies, crates, piddle pads, food, and a playpen. Whatever you need.
- NED wants fostering to be a rewarding, enjoyable experience for you and your family, support is available 24/7 via email and phone.
- NED will take into consideration your situation when determining where to place a dog for foster care. Important factors include children, other pets, your work/travel schedule, and the dog's temperament and level of training. You can always say no, we don't wish to overload you, or burn out volunteers.
- As with our adopters, NED requires that your animals are spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccines, including kennel cough. NED will conduct a home visit, prior to placing a dog.
- Fostering a dog can help socialize your existing pets.
- We are very much in need of more foster homes.
